Starting May 7, all air travelers over 18 must have compliant identification for U.S. airport security. Without it, domestic travel plans could face delays.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 set minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards, as per the Department of Homeland Security.

While REAL IDs are the standard, there are other acceptable forms of ID for travelers who haven't updated their licenses yet.

Some may have an Enhanced ID, issued by Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Vermont, or Washington. These IDs prove identity and U.S. citizenship for border crossings and are an alternative to REAL ID at airports.

Accepted forms of REAL ID include passport books or cards, which are valid for domestic travel and essential for international trips, according to the TSA.
