The REAL ID Act of 2005 established security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards, affecting federal agencies' acceptance. Children are not required to update their documents, but here's what to know.

The Transportation Security Administration does not mandate children to show ID when flying domestically. However, adults accompanying minors must have ID. Airline rules vary, with some requiring adults to accompany unaccompanied minors to the departure gate with a photo ID.

Before flying, travelers should check their carrier's requirements. For more travel updates, contact Nathan Diller, a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY, based in Nashville, at ndiller@usatoday.com.
