People rally in support of Rumeysa Ozturk and Mohsen Mahdawi outside New York Federal Court as the court considers U.S. government appeal in their cases.
A federal appeals court in New York orders Rümeysa Öztürk to be transferred from Louisiana to Vermont for continued immigration detention.

The Trump administration has one week to comply with the transfer, as ruled by a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Öztürk is currently detained in Louisiana after being arrested by federal agents in Massachusetts on allegations of supporting Hamas.

Her lawyers argue she is held in violation of her rights and without evidence of supporting terrorism.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment.

The Trump administration claims lack of detention space as reason for detaining Öztürk in Louisiana.

Legal experts view Vermont as a more favorable venue for Öztürk's case than Louisiana.

Öztürk's bail hearing will take place in Vermont on Friday.
