Airlines suggest arriving at least two hours early for domestic flights, but sometimes circumstances force travelers to arrive just in time. Even if you make your flight, your bags might not. Most airlines have specific deadlines for checking in luggage.

Delta Air Lines recently updated their baggage check-in deadlines:
"Starting April 8, there was a minor change to the U.S. domestic minimum bag drop times. This is to ensure all customers have a safe and enjoyable flight experience with their bags," a Delta Air Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.
Delta mentioned that most passengers check their luggage more than 45 minutes before departure, minimizing disruptions.
For domestic flights, the general rule is at least 45 minutes before departure and longer for international flights. Arriving even earlier at the airport allows for potential wait times at check-in counters or curbside.
Here are the baggage check-in rules for the five largest U.S. airlines:
- Alaska Airlines: 50 minutes before most domestic flights; 60 minutes for specific Alaskan locations and international flights.
- American Airlines: 45 minutes for domestic flights; 60 minutes for international flights.
- Delta Air Lines: 45 minutes for domestic flights; 60 minutes for international flights.
- Southwest Airlines: No specified cutoff for domestic flights; 60 minutes for international flights.
- United Airlines: 45 minutes for domestic flights; 60 minutes for international flights.
Specific airports may have varying check-in times. For instance, JFK Airport requires 60 minutes, and Athens Airport needs two hours for checked bags. Check individual airline websites for more details.
Travelers on other airlines should consult their carrier for specific baggage check-in deadlines.
